Although it is amongst the oldest cities in the world, there is no reason to assume Athens is out of touch with modern standards when it comes to accommodation. The city boasts a range of top quality hotels to suit any tourists' needs. It is easy to forget that Athens is a thriving European capital when walking around the Acropolis or exploring the Roman Agora but, as befits its status, the city can boast all the major hotel chains as well as more traditional accommodation.

Those who want the very best that Athens can offer should head to the area of the city around Constitution Square, where you'll find larger, more modern complexes and heaven for shoppers - Ermou Street progresses from the square and is a completely pedestrianised thoroughfare lined with international shops selling the latest in couture, music and generally any goods you could imagine.

If you fancy really capturing the flavour of Athens a good option is to head into the Plaka at the foot of the Acropolis. The Plaka is also the most convenient location for access to the Parthenon and the ancient ruins that sit atop the hill, but, be warned, Athens is an extremely lively city and the Plaka in particular, packed with cafes and markets, rarely quietens down. Alternatively head out of the city towards the coast and take advantage of the slightly cooler sea breezes. Along Syngrou Avenue there are several modern hotels that offer easy access to the city without the hassle of a city centre location.

Athens is an extremely popular destination in high season, and particularly during the Athens festival spanning June to October when most of the major events take place (amongst which are spectacular open-air events centred on Athens' most famous landmarks) - Be prepared to book early during this period.
