Although it is an increasingly popular tourist destination, Barcelona is also very much a working city. Room prices tend to fluctuate as congresses and exhibitions come and go in this fiesta city. Weekends generally are busy throughout the year.

The busiest months in Barcelona are March to May and September to October, when booking your accommodation early is strongly advised.

The airport is situated 14km from the city centre and the large hotels that cluster around this area of Barcelona - for example the Alfa Aeropuerto - can be attractive propositions, especially if arriving late into the city.

Tips;

Barcelona's public transport network is excellent comprising trains, buses and the metro. It is cheap, efficient and not too difficult to navigate and if you do get stuck you can call Barcelona's multi-lingual helpline on Tel: 010 from anywhere in the city. The metro system in particular is brilliantly useful for getting around Barcelona and on Friday and Saturday nights it runs until 02h00 (23h00 between Sunday and Thursday with nightbuses operating later). Make use of it and choose one of the many better value hotels within a 10 minute radius of the Ramblas which provide a safer, quieter base from which to explore Barcelona.
