The majority of Edinburgh's city centre accommodation is split between the Old Town (based aroundthe Royal Mile) and the Georgian New Town (around Princes Street). The Royal Mile runs from Edinburgh Castle at the top to the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the foot and is actually made up of four separate streets that seamlessly run into each other - Castle Hill, the Lawnmarket, High Street and the Canongate.

If you want to be in the centre of things, hotels can be found on both Princes Street and in the Old Town around the Castle and Grassmarket. All tastes are catered for, whether you want traditional Scottish baronial or ultra-modern designer properties. Between the grand Georgian architecture of the New Town, hotels on small side roads offer an intimate, personal base from which to explore the city. Good value accommodation is also available at the airport and around the city's greener suburbs.

It is strongly advisable to book many months, or even a year, in advance for accommodation during Edinburgh's two huge annual events - New Years Eve and the Edinburgh Festival. If you like a party and don't mind crowds, New Year - Hogmanay to the Scots- sees more than 100,000 people pack the city centre for a four-day celebration that is one of the most spectacular New Year parties in the world. The second busy season is in August and September when the Edinburgh Festival and Edinburgh Fringe turn the city into a cultural paradise, and temporarily triple the population.
