Among all of Italy's cities, only Venice outstrips Florence in the price of its accommodation. Due to a lack of space and the city's desire to preserve its landscape, there are few new hotel developments in the city resulting in a demand that always exceeds supply. However, even the most modern hotels can be located in beautiful period buildings and Florence's visitor can benefit from some of the most delightfully characteristic accommodation in the world.

Hotels are liberally scattered throughout the city and variance in price (and quality) can be found everywhere. Prices tend to be cheaper along the river than they are in the centre, and the temperature can be cooler. Decent middle class hotels can be found within a stone's throw of the Ponte Vecchio. The south side of the river has fewer hotels but is competitively priced if you don't mind staying more on the periphery of things. Around the Duomo and central district prices tend to be higher, although more modest accommodation (by Florence standards) isn't impossible to find. Even right in the heart of the main tourist attractions there is a high density of hotel accommodation although quality can vary from street to street.

Planning ahead is essential - Florence is currently one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. Naturally, peaks occur in the summer months but the better hotels will be near to capacity all year round. Although it isn't impossible to find a bed at short notice, the best deals are always the first to go so if you're looking for decent value in an expensive city, booking well in advance is definitely advisable.
