Lisbon is one of the forgotten capital cities of Europe. With a population of under a million it isn't among the continent's great centres, but a capital city it remains and it has the accommodation and prices to match. However, expensive in Portugal is a different matter to expensive elsewhere (even with the increase in prices caused by the growth of the country's tourist industry).

The most fun places to stay in Lisbon are the older areas of the city such as the Alfama or the Bairro Alta. These well-preserved historical sectors have bags of character and are among the most beautiful areas of what is already a very beautiful city. However, there isn't a vast amount of accommodation to be had round here, and some of it might not be up to muster in terms of standards. These are also the most popular areas of the city and can remain busy well into the night. If you don't like noise the Alfama definitely isn't for you.

In these and other central districts you'll find Portuguese pensãos - low-cost, no frills guesthouses. Although these establishments can be basic they command surprisingly excellent locations for tourists, right at the heart of the most interesting older areas and near to Lisbon's major attractions. Elsewhere in the city and its surroundings are larger more modern hotels from the major international chains - ranging from business to deluxe class accommodation.

Tips;

You'd be well advised to book in advance for the summer months (June - August) when Lisbon's hotels are much in demand with sunseeking holidaymakers. In fact, if visiting in the summer it's worth considering whether you want to stay in the city itself or in one of the outlying coastal resorts such as Estoril. Here you'll have the advantage of the beach and the sea's cooling influence. Good public transport connections mean that Lisbon is only half an hour away from the resorts along the Costa do Sol.
