Central Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements or administrative quarters which spiral out from the centre. The majority of the grand hotels are in the 1er and 8e arrondissements, west of the Louvre and though luxurious tend to be expensive. By contrast, the Marais district of Paris (4e) east of the Centre Pompidou boasts a host of smaller charming hotels at somewhat more reasonable prices.

The 9e offers great value hotels of a good standard housed in traditional Parisian style buildings with an abundance of shops and restaurants to hand.

High quality hotel accommadation is to be found in the designer shopping area of the 6e close to the church of St-Germain-des-Prés, but the prices are more reasonable than the grand hotels along the river.

Back across the river, the Latin Quarter of Paris (5e), south of the central islands, has a great selection of hotels of all types, from very elegant complexes set around their own courtyard to simple town houses that offer good value for money.

Tips;

As with all popular European cities you will definitely pay a premium for hotel location but there are many 'centres' to Paris and good compromises are to be found if you are happy to hop onto the Metro (Paris's excellent underground system) to move between them.
Trains operate between 05h30 and 00h30, are extremely frequent and stops tend to be close together, meaning that every attraction is only a short walk from one station or another. A carnet of ten tickets is just EUR8.84 and you can change lines as often as you like on a single journey without using a new ticket
