When Prague first came to
the attention of Western tourists in the 80s the hotel accommodation
tended to be cheap and pretty cheerless. However since the thawing
and gradual warming of the East/West divide, Prague has begun
to adapt and the better hotels of the city are now indistinguishable
from those within any European capital.
Over the last 20 years new hotels have
sprung up all over Prague and cater to both business travellers
and holiday makers alike. Standards are high and prices match
those for accommodation in any other of Europe's great cities.
Service is impeccable by European standards and hotel staff tend
to be multi-lingual, which is rarer among Prague's inhabitants
than you might expect in a European capital and tourist centre.
But, it has to be said, if you stay in
Prague outside the luxury and Western chain hotels you'll find
reminders of the communist days of some sort or other. This can
range from unenthusiastic and sporadic service (more amusing than
annoying - and admittedly more often than not caused by language
difficulties) at one end of the spectrum to the full experience
of 70s style phones, thin orange curtains and hot water for only
an hour every morning. But for most people this is part of the
charm of the place and prices among the "stare struktura"
hotels (literally the "old building" hotels) more than
compensate.
Tips;
Prague is a year round destination.
Although the weather is bitterly cold in winter, there is something
magical about Prague in ice and snow and this means that booking
in advance is essential. If you have left it late and can't find
hotel accommodation right in the centre at your budget, don't
be afraid of staying out of the Old Town - Prague really isn't
a huge city and most of its attractions are within walking distance
of each other.
In the outer centre and suburbs such as Prague 4, 7 and 8 hotels
are better value and Prague does have a good transport infrastructure
- trams, buses and the metro - that will get you into the centre
from your chosen hotel with a minimum of fuss and expense within
10-15 minutes. Trams are surprisingly modern and clean, run regularly
and are more direct than buses with stops scattered throughout
Prague.
