Travel Guide to Sydney

Sydney with its Opera House, business trade centre and nearby beaches remains Australia's most visited city. A city that's hard to forget, you can't help but be impressed by everything it has to offer, from famous landmarks, to shopping, to entertainment, to dining. A truly cosmopolitan city with a vibrant way of life.

Scheduled flights to Sydney can be booked with a variety of airlines from the UK, dependent on where you want to stop-over en-route. BA and Qantas fly mainly via Bangkok and Singapore. Shopping:

Sydney is very cosmopolitan and you'll find many UK hight street names in the shopping malls. Shops generally open from 9am to 5.30pm but, like the UK, many open to later hours and Sundays. Late night shopping is Thursday

Recommended -Darling Harbour for its large mall and excellent food halls. Oxford Street for trendy designer wear.

Sightseeing Attractions:

Sydney Opera House & Sydney Harbour Bridge - Australia's two most most famous city landmarks, both dominating the harbour scene.

Darling Harbour
- A revitalised area featuring a massive shopping complex, the Sydney Aquarium and the conference centre.

The Rocks
- the old part of Sydney, near the harbour, features interesting architecture and has plenty of bars, restaurants and musical entertainment.

Centrepoint
- Panoramic views of the city from Sydney's tallest building.

Harbour Cruise
- no trip to Sydney is complete without taking a harbour cruise. Many cruises offer the option of meals at lunch and dinner. Some are aboard replica paddle steamers and Chinese junks.

Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb
- take a trip to the top of Sydney Harbour Bridge and enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

Blue Mountains
- an hour and a half drive from Sydney by car, it's worth visiting this mountain range for it's glorious blue colour and interesting wildlife. Please ensure that you have some durable footwear ,preferably boots, as the area is quite rocky. In winter skiing is possible higher up the range.

Recommended Sport & Entertainment:

Beaches - Bondi beach is Australia's most famous beach and is very popular with locals. Other beaches further along the coast are more open and less crowded. Manly, just across from the harbour, has a good beach also.

Theatre/Opera
- Sydney Opera House offers the very best of traditional opera, plus Australian classical and modern contemparary productions. A wonderful accoustic environment.

Night Clubs
- Too many to feature, but Home Nightclub, Cockle Bay is a popular club with locals and offers the latest in dance music and live entertainment

Bars/Discos - there are pleny of trendy bars to visit. The Customs Housenear Centrepoint and the Pump House in darling Harbour are popular pubs. CBD in Darling Harbour is a popular disco, whilst bars in The Rocks are lively and feature live rock and pop music bands.

Adults
- Kings Cross is the Soho area of Sydney, while many Oxford Street bars cater for the Gay community.
Others - Sydney has lots of outdoor recreational activities on offer with jarbour sailing a popular past time. If you want peace and quiet should head the Japanese Garden or the Botanical Gardens where you can relax and have a picnic.

Eating Out
- Sydney with its multicultural society offers every international cuisine from Oriental dishes to humble fish and chips. Greek and Italian restaurants are excellent and he variety of fish caught here makes eating fish an amazing and tasty experience. Restaurants to try are 'Nicks's Seafood' at Cockle Bay, 'Doyles' on Watson's Bay and 'The Rockpool' restaurant in The Rocks. If you're adventurous try the Aboriginal bush specialities.
