Travel Guide to Tokyo
The capital city of Japan, Tokyo has a lot to offer and is at the forefront of innovation in electronics and finance. The lifestyle here is vibrant and hectic, with plenty of bars, restaurants and shops. Getting around the city is easy as Tokyo has one of the world's best metro systems. However, Tokyo is expensive by Western standards and a very crowded city where certain customs should be observed.

For cheap flights to Tokyo look out for airline promotions and low season, off-peak discount airline tickets. Flying via another Asian hub, rather than direct, can get you a better price.

Shopping:

Japan in general is very expensive, but for electronics you can pick up the latest innovations before they reach the European market. If you like gadgets, this is the type of shopping you'll love.

Sightseeing Attractions:

National Sumo Stadium - experience sumo wrestling, Japan's favourite sport. Cost Y6,000.

Imperial Palace - The royal palace of the Emperor of Japan.

The Nijubasi Bridge - considered to be the best bridge in Japan and a must to see before leaving Tokyo.

Asakusa Kannon - is a sacred area leading up to the holy shrine. Inside this complex there are handicraft shops and outside you can take a cruise down the Sumida river.

The Shitamachi Museum - this museum displays items from the Edo to Taisho eras.

Senso - Ji Temple - a huge paper lantern hangs outside this oldest temple in Tokyo.

Others - Tokyo has a variety of beautiful gardens such as East Garden, Hama Rikyu Garden and Shinjuku Garden. Perfect environments to relax in surrounded by exotic and attractive fauna.

Recommended Entertainment:

Night Clubs/Bars/Discos - countless venues in the Ropponga, Shinjuki and Nisha-Asabu areas offering the best of nightlife that Tokyo has to offer. Kareoke is a popular pasttime in bars.

Amusement Parks - Tokyo Disneyland has plenty of magical experiences including "Jungle Cruise", Space Mountain" and "Pirates of the Carribean". Open Mon - Fri, 10.00am - 18.00pm. Toshimaen/Hydro Polis located in the centre of Tokyo features many various roller coaster rides, games and water park attractions for the kids to enjoy.

Eating Out - Local and international cuisine is easy to find and there are plenty of places to eat especially within the Isakaya area. Local recommended dishes include Sushi, Tempura, Noodlesand Suki-yaki are the most traditional . Try these oriental dishes washed down with Saki (rice wine liqueur). Japanese beer such as Kirin or Sapporo are excellent, but amazingly the Japanese favourite tipple here is Guiness and other dark ales.

Local Transport :
The Tokyo Metro is one of the most famous in the world. During rush hours they really cram passengers on, but it's fast and frequent. Avoid peak hours to travel more comfortably.
